If you like the wellerman, try on this classic

this is a pathologic ass song

The Chemical Worker’s Song. Not far off our current days’ wage slave experience. I’m telling you, you need Union Songs.

Sailors aboard a ship used to hum to warn the captain they were THIS close to a mutiny and didn’t like conditions AT ALL. Because humming was something others could keep doing when you stopped. Anyone comes close you stop, but the hum of the rest keeps on and they can’t prove who, exactly, is doing it.

Just saying.

Sea shanties are a gateway drug to work/labour songs of all kinds, labour songs always end up including union songs, and that’s how you end up extremely hardcore for organised labour.

And if people want more information, this particular song is called “The Chemical Worker’s Song (Process Man)”, written by the Canadian folk group Great Big Sea.

Sea shanties and labour songs are an active tradition! Are you pissed? Sing about it.

The Chemical Worker’s Song is iconic (and in fact a longtime staple of UK LARP filk!) but while Great Big Sea did a cover of it, it was in fact written by Ron Angel in the UK, in 1964. Originally called the ICI Song, it referred to the grim working conditions in an Imperial Chemical Industries factory in north-east England.

The lighting in this video takes it from great to awesome.

I have officially concluded that this woman is a siren. My evidence:

1) Outstanding vocal ability no mere mortal could hope to achieve
2) Haunting lyrics that speak to deep and depressing truths of the world
3) No way to prove she has legs
4) I feel so enchanted listening to her sing that I’d probably let her drown me

Here’s a full version of The Chemical Worker’s Song, for anyone who’s curious

This whole song hits like a sledgehammer, but the stanza that sticks out to me lately is this one:

There’s overtime and bonus opportunities galore
The young men like their money and they all come back for more
But soon you’re knockin’ on and you look older than you should
For every bob made on the job, you pay with flesh and blood

speckled-dragon audio I come back to tumblr due to FF14 maint and all I'm doing is reblogging audio

Hozier singing trad song “The Parting Glass”

Other celebrities: (goopily drip upon, of all things, “imagine”)

Us: (call for the guillotine)

Hozier: (a bittersweet lad, sings an ancient song to the departed)

Us: play this over silent, crisply shot black and white footage of the empty streets and silent landmarks. cut with shots of our drowning hospitals. An acceptable future documentary of 2020 that we will allow.

My audio processing isnt working in the brain. Can someone PLEASE tell me what the crud he’s saying because all i can make out are sounds not words

Saw your post while skimming through the reblog and did not see an answer, so for accessibility!  Hozier is singing the following:

Of all the money that e’er I had / I spend it in good company

And of all the harm that e’er I done / Alas it was to none but me

For all I’ve done for want of wit / to memory now I can’t recall

So fill to me the parting glass / good night and joy be with you all.

Of all the comrades that e’er I had / they’re sorry for my going away

And of all the sweethearts that e’er I had / they’d wish me one more day to stay

But as it falls unto my lot / that I must go and you must not

I’ll gently rise and I’ll softly call / good night and joy be with you all.

when i first read the lyrics to this a year or so ago, i always thought it was a sad song (contrary to what google says about it being a pub song), and hearing this solemn and heartfelt rendition by hozier always makes me tear up

Google’s technically right, it is a pub song, but not in the sense you’re thinking. This is what I call an “end of the night” song - these tend to be somber, nostalgic, and contain references to a final drink/toast eg “the parting glass” usually either in memory of death, or in the knowledge of death to come. Others include Auld Lang Syne and Health to the Company. They’re “let’s drink to old times because we might not all meet here again” songs.

In Welsh-speaking Wales, it’s Yma o Hyd. Which actually translates to “We’re still here lol”, but it’s not a joke song. Yma o Hyd is a resistance song about how, in spite of everyone and everything that England has done and tried to do to us, we’re still here. We’re still able to go to the pub, and join together in a shared community, in Welsh. We’re still a culture that can do this. We’re still here.

It even has a verse name dropping Thatcher.

Do Umei and you mind someone writing fanfic based on your works? Like an AU of an AU? With proper credit, of course.

Umei technically has one that’s already been started? It was six chapters last I saw? Someone reincarnates as Dorea’s french cousin and didn’t realize they were in an HP fanfic or something?

But seriously, just send Umei a message through FF or leave a message on a fic on AO3 to ask first.

Izzy answers anon gotta cross your t's and dot your i's and all that

Anonymous asked:

Do you have plans to continue your KHR/OP Fic?

Eventually, but uh, I kinda want more OP worldbuilding, not Four Warlords tragic backstory

Also I’m kinda behind on the OP chapters, have other commitments and has had stressful IRL family things going on in recent months

Izzy answers anon One Piece I love you Oda but I'd like to ask you questions of how things work devil fruit mechanics are nice but I'd like to ask questions about taxes and smuggling and not just have pirates punching each other

stereden asked:

I'm currently on day three of staying in the hospital waiting for a free slot for ONE test, and re-reading Black Sky is the only thing keeping me sane - so I wanted to thank Umei and you for all that amazing work, because Black Sky remains one of my favourite fics ever! The worldbuilding, both for the HP world and the KHR world, is just absolutely brillant! It seems like Umei is focusing on Naruto fics atm, so I'll probably dive into those once I'm done with my reread, but thank you again!

I hope you’re doing okay, as it sounds stressful because hospitals are never fun and even less fun when you’re there for only the one thing!

Izzy recently had an aunt in the hospital for like five days while she waited for the Kidney Doctor to sign off on her release from the hospital. It was kind of a mess, with like six different docs weighing in and he (presumed) was the only one holding everything up.

And Izzy knows Umei has magical ninjas on the brain. Madara took up brain space and provides rent in words, so Umei is along for the ride, as pandemic is not conclusive to writing her happy fic that is known as Black Sky.

Izzy answers stereden rereading Black Sky is an endevour because many and much words so many words remember to take breaks for food and water and bathroom

Anonymous asked:

Do you have any head canons about the every day life of the Varia?

Izzy thinks a lot of them ended up in Black Sky and Parenting is Not a Varia Quality

But Bel sometimes ends up manning the phones with his squad and he always gets those spam callers when doing so not that anyone would ever transfer them to him specifically.

So rip the scammers.

And the Varia may have recorded and ranked some of them, just for funsies.

Izzy answers anon Varia Bel would totally make the scammers regret ever calling And may have actually taken the time to actually murder them on a whim

ghoulantisocial asked:

Everytime i think of like black sky being on ao3 i think of it as just like being seperate by like arc ig and put in the same series, because black sky is big, its like over a million words

Ye, Izzy has mentioned the idea to Umei a while back

But it still comes down to, “if move, will edit,”

Umei: If I start moving it, I will want to Edit It

so not unless ffnet actually crashes and burns before I get it finished

I do have a full backup, people can be Reassured

If ffnet falls off the face of the earth, I have Everything (edited)

both on my Actual Computer and on the cloud

So uh, may need to wait for it to finish, as technically the end is somewhat in sight of Black Sky. The Future Arc got yeeted to Tsuna’s Terrible Adventure Game Sidestory, the Inheritance Ceremony Arc got subverted and the Arcobaleno Arc is the last bit of KHR plot to go but it will still take a while to get to and finish that off. Then a bit more to tie off more story threads for a good ending place.

But at the moment, Umei has magical ninjas on the brain and the pandemic doing the depressive vibes which inhibits the writing of the “happy fic” that is Black Sky

Izzy answers ghoulantisocial Black Sky Izzy is fully aware that summer project of magical ninjas has stretched on for nearly two years Izzy blames the plague
